If it's time to gather around in the garden for a party, we can think of no better gas grill than the Cuisinart CGG-999 (also known as the CGWM-056). It really is something that's made to sit in the middle of a gathering, with a huge cold-rolled circular cooktop that's as suited to packing on skewers of meat as it is to preparing a delicious breakfast.
Design-wise Cuisinart has done a superb job, with sensible grease management, integrated paper towel storage and a lid which further adds to the versatility of the CGG-999, and while it's apparently not too kind on your gas bottle - and you'll absolutely need to look after it if you want it to last - it's a large and very flexible griddle. It's plenty hot enough too, with three burners throwing out 30,000 BTU of heat. And it's built to that Weber standard we all know and love, backed by a ten-year warranty.
The porcelain-enameled Flavorizer bars are great for distributing heat evenly as well as for catching drips for smokey flavor, plus they're easy to clean and help protect the burners. If grease drips do occur, you'll notice that these are funneled into disposable grease pans, which is (let's be honest) a blessing and a curse. Good because there's no chance of a single grease tray rusting out, but bad because of running costs and environmental concerns.
Since this is Weber, the Spirit II E-310 Gas Grill will work with lots of official Weber accessories, including the iGrill 3 Bluetooth thermometer. That said, the easy-lift lid does have a standard thermometer built-in. This certainly isn't the cheapest gas grill on the market, but we think it's worth the extra money for the high build quality and consistent, reliable cooking performance.

If you're on the move a lot, you'll be grateful for the Weber Q1200 Gas Grill. It's super-compact yet performs like a champ. In fact, we think it's the best portable propane barbecue you can buy, both in terms of build quality and overall performance.
Despite being small enough to easily take in your car or RV, this packs in 189 square inches of grill space, a stainless steel burner ring for 8,500 BTU of power, and a lid (with built-in thermometer) that does a great job of blocking any wind.
The result is consistent heat for your food, but Weber has also put usability in mind when coming up with its design; you're even given side tables so you don't feel cramped while cooking up a storm on the road.

If you're looking for a portable grill with a greater cooking area than most, Royal Gourmet's four-burner gas grill and griddle combo could be the one for you. With almost 600 square inches of hot surface split between grill bars and a substantial griddle and folding legs which allow it to fit into just about any trunk. The Royal Gourmet GD401 4-Burner Folding Gas Grill Griddle is a great choice for setting up a tailgate station, though it does skim the limits of portability in terms of weight.
There's plenty of heat to offer your food, with four individually adjustable burners, but we'd be careful about purchasing this if you don't have an inside space in which to store it as there's no lid to keep the elements off. That also limits its potential in terms of the specific things you can cook - but we don't think anyone's going to mind if you just load them up with burgers.
Home Depot's user score for the Royal Gourmet GD401 4-Burner Folding Gas Grill Griddle averages at 4.2 out of 5 stars, which isn't bad, though there are a number of negatives regarding the materials prematurely rusting and certain grills having slight quality control flaws out of the box. There are plenty of positives, however - this seems to be a grill users love for its simplicity and versatility, with the two side tables giving lots of options, though you may want to supply your own lid.

Speaking about gas versus charcoal grills, Lexerot noted that gas grills give you even, long-lasting heat, whereas charcoal grills get hot quickly then "peter out over time." His advice: "If you're doing something quick, charcoal is fine, but if you are doing a larger project you need the indirect heat gas grills provide."
When asked about what he looks for in a good gas grill he said, "You want one that has some kind of flare-up control, so if you drip some grease it doesn't turn into a tire fire and ruin your food – especially chicken."
The most important point Lexerot stressed was, "If you're going to get a gas grill that you plan on using regularly, get a sturdy grill with ample features, that's easy to use and will hold up over time."
However, not all grillers make gas grills their first choice. Jesse Johnson of the Utah BBQ Association is a pitmaster for a competitive BBQ team. At the time of publication, he owned 14 grills. He generally uses wood-burning grills because they create the Maillard reaction, which imparts more flavor to your meat. But he will use gas grills to create a reverse sear on steaks.
His preference for wood-burning grills means that his 16-year-old Weber Platinum mostly gathers dust. However, he's still a fan of the brand. "They make some of the best products before you get into the crazy money," Johnson told us. "Weber is probably the biggest name in grilling."
Although he favors wood-burning grills, he says it's all a matter of personal preference: "If someone is just looking to cook hamburgers and hot dogs, a gas grill will work just fine. But when I'm cooking for the family I like to slow everything down. The environment of cooking with the family is more important."

Grilling area
Think about how much food you are going to prepare and purchase your model accordingly. The biggest grills we reviewed can cook up to 12 hamburgers at the same time, which may be perfect for some but overkill for others. Smaller grills we reviewed can fit three to eight burgers, which is probably enough for the average family.
Heat consistency
An unevenly heated grill can lead to inconsistent results. You may end up with one burger or steak burned, while the others are undercooked. Make sure you get a model that distributes heat evenly across the entire cooking space. However, if you do run into problems with heat distribution, you can probably confine your cooking to the center of the burner, where the heat will have the most uniformity.
Design
Most of the grills we reviewed have stainless steel exteriors. When maintained and cleaned properly, most of these grills can stand up to weather, wear, tear and rust. The best grills have grates that are made of cast iron, which delivers a better cooking experience and is easier to clean than stainless steel.
Portability
When you buy a gas grill, you should consider what you'll be using it for and how much you intend to move it. If it's going to sit on your patio for years, you can probably get a bigger, heavier model like the Nexgrill or Char-Broil Performance. Most of the grills we reviewed have roller wheels, so you can move them around a bit.
But if you take your grill on the road with you, it's important to be able to move it around easily. Medium-size grills, such as the Weber Spirit II, have larger wheels and fit nicely into a truck bed. However, if space is tight, we recommend smaller models, such as the Coleman RoadTrip X-cursion, and tabletop models like the Cuisinart Petit Gourmet. They fit easily in a trunk or even the back seat of a car.
